Brain Health: The Challenge and the Opportunity

The global toll of brain disorders exceeds that of all other diseases. Over the past 100 years, biomedical science has made substantial progress categorizing brain diseases, identifying molecular and structural changes that accompany disease and developing drugs that have had enormous success alleviating the symptoms of many brain diseases. This progress has helped millions of people around the globe, but its impact on reducing suffering has been incremental, a consequence of a lack of focus on prevention, and a lack of integration between the clinical and research fields – each possessing vital expertise on the health of the brain.

To respond to this critical need, the McCance Center for Brain Health is embracing a radically new approach that aims to prevent brain disease and promote brain health across the lifespan. We are leveraging our unique positioning in the brain health community to make the scientific discoveries needed to allow us to accurately measure brain health and integrate preventative strategies into primary care. If we can stop brain disease from forming, we can eliminate the suffering it causes.

The Impact of Philanthropy

Mass General is a pioneer in this new approach to patient care: one that integrates prevention, treatment, research and education to focus on maintaining and preserving brain health. To ensure our success, we look to visionary philanthropists who can help build effective partnerships to secure the most promising talent, launch the most high-impact research, and build tools that will provide a resource for investigators the world over. We are grateful for your partnership. For questions or more information on how you can support the McCance Center, please contact Elizabeth Barberio at 617-643-9703 or ebarberio@partners.org, or visit this page to make an online gift.
